November 2023 lecture: England and the Purple Land

The November 2023 Punta Expats Lecture speaker was Álvaro Cuenca – native of Montevideo, Uruguay, where he was educated in local British schools, and became fluent in Spanish and English. His university degrees in engineering, computer sciences, and education management led him to a career as Professor of programming, systems engineering, data structures and algorithms.

He also has a degree in English Literature, and an unquenchable passion for history and literature. Cuenca has researched and authored many books (available at Kindle) on the relationship between England and Uruguay, including:
▪ ¨Sombreros al agua, Victorian sunset in Montevideo¨
▪ “The British colony of Montevideo and the Great War”
▪ “British Anonymous”
▪ ¨Victorian Postcards in the Purple Land¨
▪ “The Purple Land’s war: the Britons in Uruguay and the Great War, 1917”

Cuenca’s bilingual presentation: “England and the Purple Land – 200 years of turbulent but productive relations” began with quotes from early 19th-century British government leaders who hoped that South America would become their business partner. He also spoke of “The Purple Land”, a novel by William Henry Hudson, and first published in 1885. The story is set in 19th-century Uruguay, and follows the careless adventures of a young Englishman against a background of political strife. (Free ebook available at www.gutenberg.org.)

Using historic maps, paintings, photographs, and early advertising, Cuenca explained the era’s international power struggles, the British invasion of the River Plate in 1807, and the evolution of the Informal British Empire — which meant a deep commercial relationship with Uruguay that remains visible in public architecture, current infrastructure, and local culture.
