May 2023 lecture: Origins of Punta del Este
The May 2023 Punta Expats Lecture Series speaker was Dr. Fernando Cairo – lawyer, historian, researcher, lecturer, native son of Maldonado, and author of 5 books about the region. His ancestors settled in Uruguay in 1843, and were witness to the origins of Punta del Este. Cairo is the current Deputy Director General of Culture of the Municipality of Maldonado, and a member of the Support Committee of the Museo Regional Francisco Mazzoni, located in downtown Maldonado.
Historic documents, maps, and photographs enlivened the story of the Origins of Punta del Este. So did Cairo’s presentation strategy. Fluent in English and able to deliver a bilingual address by himself, he decided to work in tandem with his daughter Pia (also bilingual). Section by section, he spoke enthusiastically in Spanish, then she translated into English, adding her own flair. Together, they captivated the audience.
“Sometimes the reality goes ahead of official things,” he began. “That’s what happened with Punta del Este.” In the middle 1800s a tiny fishing village was established on a wedge of land jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean. Soon a salt pan business began that collected sea salt, a food preservative, from evaporated ocean water. By the late 1800s the busy pueblo had nearly 500 inhabitants, over 100 houses, a school, and a first hotel. In 1907 the government legally declared the town into existence.
Cairo enchanted the audience with a fascinating account of Punta del Este—why it was sold in 1843 to finance a great civil war, promoted in 1889 as a travel resort, used the lighthouse in the early 1900s as a church, and became today’s international tourist destination.
