August 2023 lecture: The secret to a happy life – lessons from 8 decades of research
The August 2023 Punta Expats Lecture Series speaker was Robert Waldinger, Clinical Professor of Psychology and current Director of a Harvard Study of Adult Development. His message was shared through a TED talk video entitled: The secret to a happy life – lessons from 8 decades of research.
This Harvard Study is the longest survey of the same people that has ever been done. It began in 1938, and has followed the same group of people from adolescence through old age – and now is following all of their children.
Professor Waldinger shared the study’s scientific finding: “When we study hundreds of people over their entire adult lives, the people who turn out to be the happiest and the healthiest are those who have good, warm connections to others.”
Punta Expats Lecture attendees watched the TED talk video (in English with Spanish subtitles). A spontaneous discussion about happiness and well-being followed. As the group talked, new connections, new bonds of friendship appeared. Together, around a table at Box Garden, people were building community. It was the vision of the Punta Expats in action.
