March 2023 lecture: Alfredo Etchegaray shares his vision of Punta del Este
The March 2023 Punta Expats Lecture Series speaker was Alfredo Etchegaray – a person who has left a mark on contemporary Uruguay. Admired across his country, respected around the world, Etchegaray shared his vision about Punta del Este.
Etchegaray has always thought about improving his country, developing ideas where education, tourism, and politics reinforce each other to preserve and promote natural beauty and culture. The audience greatly appreciated learning about his vision of Uruguay, his humor, and his humanity.
“Uruguayans came from different parts of the world,” he began. His country benefited from this diversity of peoples, cultures, and ideas – and reciprocated by giving back to the world.
As evidence, he spoke of Uruguay’s famous soccer team, free education, and universal healthcare. Touched on Charles Darwin’s 1833 stay in Maldonado that presaged his theory of evolution. Elaborated on tango, the country’s simple immigration policy, and its commitment to freedom. Freedom to be independent, share ideas, enjoy a sunset with friends. “Being happy is related to the way you understand life,” he offered.
“Culture is the strongest tool to improve and to live in a country,” he stressed. “The power is in your head, your mind.” Punta is experiencing a new cycle of people coming from around the world. This new diversity of culture, he added, will bring our culture and business to the globe – once again.
